Solo Show by
Shashikant Dhotre
1 st to 15 th Jan 2010
Shashikant Dhotre specialises in conventional portraits that are based on the academic realistic tradition of the West. He does outstanding chiaroscuro work and shows excellent handling of tone . He has produced an amazingly alive skin tone in his paintings where light falls on her three fourt profile, parts of her neck and upper body. The mellow light froma single source creates a soft sadness in her young downcast expression, illuminates the inticrate, superbly highlights the elobrates zari embroidery of her dress and makes her string of pearls sparkle.
Interestingly, Dhotre has executed the portraits with colour pencils, a rarely used medium in India for high art. A young self-taught, inspired artist of great potential from the Sholapur region of Maharashtra, he learnt art on his own through intense observation and practise. During a short span of 3 years (06-09), Shashikant has won 9 major awards, including the Governor’s Award, Maharashtra.
